AFGTO assesses every Afghanistan tour operator against a consistent set of criteria before including them in our directory. This page explains what we check, why we check it, and what our verification status means.
1. Legal Business Registration
All listed operators must provide proof of legal business registration with the relevant Afghan government authority. This may include registration with the Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA), the Ministry of Commerce, or local provincial commercial registration offices. We verify that the registration is current and matches the operating company’s name.
2. Operational History
We require a minimum of two years of documented operational history with international clients. This helps ensure that listed operators have real-world experience managing the specific challenges of international travel in Afghanistan, including logistics, communication, and safety management.
3. Guide Qualifications
Every operator must employ or retain English-speaking guides with verifiable training and experience. We assess guide language proficiency, knowledge of relevant destinations, and emergency response training.
4. Safety Protocols
Operators must have documented safety protocols covering emergency communication procedures, evacuation planning, medical response, and risk assessment processes for itineraries. We review these documents as part of the application process.
5. Client References
We require a minimum of three verifiable international client references. These are real travelers who have used the operator’s services and can speak to their professionalism, reliability, and safety record. We contact references directly as part of our review.
6. No Adverse History
We review publicly available information for any record of fraud, client abandonment, scam reports, or safety incidents. Operators with significant unresolved complaints or documented fraudulent activity will not be listed.
What “Verified” Means
AFGTO verification means that, at the time of our review, the operator met all criteria listed above. It does not mean that AFGTO endorses every aspect of the operator’s services, guarantees trip outcomes, or assumes liability for traveler experiences. Verification reflects our assessment of the operator’s legitimacy and baseline standards, not a warranty of service quality.
We recommend re-verifying operator status before any booking, as conditions in Afghanistan can change. Operators are re-reviewed annually.
